This exhibition features posters created by Korean graphic designer Byoung-il Sun(1958- ), who is active internationally in the field. It presents 31 poster designs that visualize the characteristics of Korean Alphabet(Hangeul) and the unique aesthetics of Korea. Hangeul typography posters visualizing the form and inherent meaning of Hangeul are shown in Part 1, while the posters with various symbolic images under the theme of Koreanism are displayed in Part 2.
Part 1: Hangeul Becoming an Image
The greatness of Hangeul comes from the effective mechanism of transference to formative symbols rather than their shapes. In particular, my experiments focus on the visual images of consonant characters. I try to explore the principle of creation of Hangeul and focus on expression of various images through combination of characters and modules. The key concepts include composition/decomposition, order/rules, proliferation/repetition, and symbols/rhythm. In sum, the whole process is visualization of the forms of characters and conceptual meanings. Construction of images and functional aspect of visual systems are at the heart of this exhibition rather than the identity of expressions.
Part 2: Thinking of Koreanism
This project exploring Koreanism consists of two worlds. The first is ‘new discovery of traditional matters’ and the other is ‘traditional empathy with daily matters’. The former intends to the nowness of tradition, while the latter aims to restore tradition from the present. Here, the ‘new discovery of traditional elements’ contains discovery of both meaning and matters. I believe that such attempts will help reveal one’s uniqueness.
A property of matters associated with images can be classified into two: those with quality and those with peculiarity. Meaning and symbols can only be created only through interpretation of such qualities and peculiarities. This whole process strives to identify the symbol system of Koreanism.
