Jejungwon was the first Western-style hospital in Korea, established in 1885 by King Gojong and the Joseon government. Its founding was inspired by American physician Horace N. Allen, who successfully treated Min Yeong-ik using Western medicine after the Gapsin Coup.
The hospital was originally named Gwanghyewon, but after only 14 days its name was changed to Jejungwon, meaning “to save and care for the people.” Patients from all social classes—including commoners, women, and members of the royal court—were able to receive medical treatment there.
Jejungwon was more than a hospital. It also served as an educational institution where Western medicine was taught and Korean physicians were trained. For this reason, it is widely regarded as the starting point of modern medical care and medical education in Korea.
