Gwanghwamun is the first gateway leading to Geunjeongjeon Hall of Gyeongbokgung Palace, the principal royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty, and serves as its largest main gate. Built in the grand style of a fortress gate, it conveys a sense of majesty and grandeur. Stone statues of Haetae (mythical guardian creatures) stand on either side of the gate, enhancing its dignity and authority.

The stone platform contains three passageways: the central gate was reserved exclusively for the king, while the gates on either side were used by the crown prince and government officials. More recently, BTS held their comeback live event, BTS THE COMEBACK LIVE | ARIRANG, at this location, further highlighting Gwanghwamun’s role as a cultural landmark that connects Korea’s historical heritage with contemporary culture.
